This unit will provide an introduction to the variation of health and illness within, and between, populations. It will focus on human experience and behaviour in health and illness, and the ways in which people and societies organise themselves to deal with the consequences of illness. It will also provide a broadening view of health and illness: starting from an individual and psychological view, via the family and structural features of society, ending with a public health perspective.
By the end of the ICU students should be able to:
- Understand the sources and uses of data on the population's health and health care needs.
- Explain the different types of epidemiological study and how they can be used to describe health, assess the causes of disease, and evaluate treatments.
- Understand the principles of improving population health.
- Explain the role of health policy in attaining strategic objectives.
By the end of the unit students will have basic knowledge of:
- Epidemiological data sources and uses.
- Numerical methods for the analysis of clinical and scientific data.
- The principles of improving population health.
- The role of health policy in meeting strategic objectives.
The unit aims to develop a professional attitude towards public health, epidemiology and medical statistics.
Epidemiology and Critical Numbers:
Introduction to epidemiology; descriptive studies; cohort studies; case control studies; randomised controlled trials; qualitative methods; description of data; measuring risk; confidence intervals.
Critical appraisal:
Introduction to critical appraisal; using a critical appraisal tool; critical appraisal in context.
Public health:
Improving population health; the role of health policy in the NHS; health needs assessment; health protection; preventative medicine; health promotion; global public health; public health role of organisations in the community, measuring health, ethics of public health.

This comprises a range of activities which you are to complete in your own time either in preparation for, or to follow up, a particular lecture, tutorial or placement. These activities include additional reading on topics, preparation for tutorials and lectures, completion of assessed course work, etc.
Student progress will be monitored through attendance and contribution to sessions and through completion of the assessment for learning tasks which provide formative feedback throughout the course. Assessment for learning will include group work presentations and a written report.
